Bio for Dr. Giuseppe Papia
Dr. Giuseppe Papia, MD, MSc, FRC S(C)
Dr. Papia’s academic interest is patient safety and quality improvement in surgical care. He served as the physician lead for the Ontario Hospital Association during the implementation of the Surgical Safety Checklist in the province. He currently serves as the executive faculty lead-checklist implementation for the Canadian Patient Safety Institute’s Safer Healthcare Now! program. One of Dr. Papia’s interests is using minimally invasive techniques to prevent limb amputations in people with poor circulation and leg wounds. He uses minimally invasive endovascular techniques developed in cardiology to help prevent leg amputations in diabetic patients and greatly improve the quality of life in patients with peripheral vascular disease. Dr. Papia is a vascular surgeon who joined the Division of Cardiac and Vascular Surgery and the Division of Critical Care Medicine at Sunnybrook in 2009. An assistant professor at the University of Toronto, Dr. Papia served as the physician lead for Sunnybrook’s Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit from 2009 to 2013.
Bio for Dr. Robyn Evans
Dr. Robyn Evans, MD IIWCC
Robyn Evans completed a Bachelor of Science at University of Ottawa followed by graduate studies in Biochemistry, medical school at the University of Toronto, and residency in Family Medicine. She is a practicing family physician in the community and the Director of the Wound Healing Clinic at Women’s College Hospital. Her interest in wound care originated from working in long term care for 10 years. She went on to take the International Interdisciplinary Wound Care Course (IIWCC) in 2004. She worked at the North York General Hospital Wound Care Clinic before moving to Women’s College Hospital in 2005. Dr. Evans is part of the faculty for the IIWCC. She has been on the Planning Committee of the Canadian Association of Wound Care (CAWC) annual conferences in 2011 and 2012. She enjoys teaching resident and medical students and has recently undertaken an increased role in research related to wound care.
Bio for Barbie Murray
Barbie Murray, CNS BScN RN MCISc WH
Barbie Murray has been a nurse for 32 years and actively involved in nursing education and wound management initiatives. After completing her master of clinical science in wound healing at the University of Western Ontario in 2011 Barbie served as the academic dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences at Victoria University in Uganda, Africa. Barbie has participated in CMEs for advanced wound care practices here in Canada, East Africa and the UAE. She is currently employed as a clinical nurse specialist in Halifax, Nova Scotia, where she coordinates a multi-disciplinary leg ulcer clinic, which manages complex wounds through vascular, orthopedic, plastic surgery and infectious disease services. Barbie currently serves as a national director for the Canadian Association of Wound Care (CAWC).

Goal:
To provide health-care professionals with the latest strategies to identify and treat PAD using a patient-centred, evidence-based model.
Target Audience:
Physicians, cardiologists, specialists, internists, nurse practitioners, pharmacists, podiatrists and chiropodists.
Objectives:
- Discuss the current situation related to PAD
- Identify the signs and symptoms of PAD
- Distinguish among the various diagnostic tests and evaluate their value in clinical practice
- Formulate treatment plans to manage PAD and improve symptoms and quality of life of patients
- Discuss an effective PAD referral process in your practice and community setting
Bonus: This session will include a brief overview and advances in the prevention and management of wounds.
Target Competencies:
- Recognize PAD and its imact on individuals and Canadian health-care systems
- Identify how the pathology of PAD impacts the health of a person
- Develop assessment and treatment strategies that target PAD
- Implement patient centred, sustainable treatment plans involving other team members
