Why take this program?
Affecting 14.9% of people 45 years of age and older, and up to 20% of those over 70 years, peripheral arterial disease often results in tissue ischemia and ulceration and is a barrier to the wound healing process. In some situations, the presence of peripheral arterial disease and ulcerations can result in serious complications, including ongoing infection, gangrene, amputation and death. To prevent peripheral arterial ulcers and their complications, it is imperative that clinicians acquire the knowledge to identify patients at risk for peripheral arterial ulcers and implement appropriate preventative and treatment measures, using a systematic approach.
Who should take this program?
Based on the content of the Wounds Canada document, Best Practice Recommendations (BPR) for the Prevention and Management of Peripheral Arterial Ulcers, the aim of this self-paced, interactive program (two online modules and a live 1.5-hour long webinar) is to enhance the peripheral arterial ulcer prevention and management knowledge of nurses and allied health-care professionals. This program is for professionals who self-identify as a novice or advanced beginners in their peripheral arterial ulcer prevention and management knowledge.
What does the program offer?
This program will review the contents of the BPR document and will demonstrate new knowledge with participants successfully completing knowledge check questions and applying best practices to a case study.
Following the completion of the two on-line modules, students will join expert interprofessional faculty on a webinar to discuss their success in applying their new knowledge and enablers and barriers to practice change. Using live polling, students will also discuss complex wound cases presented by faculty, demonstrating the application of best practices in the prevention and management of peripheral arterial ulcers. Webinars occur twice annually, with an archived version available for viewing should the student not be able to attend the live session.
What will I receive once the program is completed?
Once the student successfully completes all of the program components (online modules, webinar, and program evaluation), they will receive a certificate of successful completion.
